Kinetoscope
Designed by a man named Thomas A. Edison, this device allows people to view motion pictures.
The kinetoscope was one of the first such devices which was widely developed and distributed.
The device was actually proven to be a failure but inspired other inventors, so can now be considered a landmark in the history of film.
The device was invented in Thomas Edison's lab but the patent was taken out by Edison making it difficult to know who was working on the project.
The design for the kinetoscope consisted of a small cabinet where people would have to peer into a small hole which was located on the top of the device.
Across a series of rollers, a back light would illuminate it, creating the illusion of a moving picture but only if the film was rotated at the correct speed.
The kinetoscope was proven to be a big hit when it was first released to the public in 1984.
